What is CBD Isolate?

CBD isolate is a form of CBD, or cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound present in the cannabis plant. Unlike full-spectrum CBD products, CBD isolate does not contain any THC — the psychoactive component of cannabis.

CBD isolate is a good option for those who would like to try CBD, but who cannot or do not want to ingest any tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the active ingredient in cannabis. Most other CBD products contain at least a small percentage of THC.

Keep reading to learn more about CBD isolate, including its potential health benefits and possible side effects. CBD isolate may affect a person’s appetite, mood, and pain perception.

CBD isolate is a crystalline solid or powder comprising pure CBD. It is different from full-spectrum CBD products, which can legally contain up to 0.3% THC. This amount may show up on a drug test, but it will not cause a high.

To produce CBD isolate, manufacturers use various processes to extract all the compounds and other substances from the cannabis plant, including THC. The process leaves behind pure CBD in crystal form.

Manufacturers may then grind the crystals into a powder to make the product easier to consume. CBD isolate does not have a distinctive smell or taste.

Effects

CBD works by acting on the cannabinoid receptors in the human body. These receptors exist because the human body produces its own cannabinoids, which may influence several bodily functions, including:

  • appetite
  • memory
  • mood
  • pain perception
  • inflammation levels

Researchers believe that CBD does not attach directly to these receptors, but that it influences them in some way. As a result of this receptor activation, CBD exerts its effects on the human body.

Potential effects of CBD include:

  • boosting the immune system (immune-modulating)
  • counteracting the formation of tumours (anti-tumorigenic)
  • fighting inflammation (anti-inflammatory)
  • preventing vomiting (antiemetic)
  • recovery or regeneration of the nervous system (neuroprotective)
  • reducing or preventing anxiety (anti-anxiety)
  • reducing or preventing seizures (anticonvulsant)
  • relieving pain (analgesic)

  • recovery or regeneration of the nervous system (neuroprotective)
  • reducing or preventing anxiety (anti-anxiety)
  • reducing or preventing seizures (anticonvulsant)
  • relieving pain (analgesic)

Studies indicate that CBD can also influence non-cannabinoid receptors, such as the 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) serotonin receptor. Serotonin is a chemical that affects levels of depression, anxiety, and sleeplessness, among others. This may help explain why CBD eases anxiety and pain in some people.

One study in mice suggests that while CBD isolate does offer certain health benefits. However, some of these may have less effect than those gained from using a full-spectrum CBD product.

Results from the study indicate that CBD isolate is only effective against pain and swelling at a specific dose. Meanwhile, full-spectrum CBD products will continue to provide increasing effects as the dosage increases.

That said, CBD isolate is still a useful option for people who must refrain from having any THC in their system, or for those who do not need a full-spectrum CBD product.

Uses and Benefits

CBD isolate may help treat the following conditions:

Anxiety

Several studies indicate that CBD has anti-anxiety effects. It likely works by changing the way the brain responds to the chemical serotonin.

A 2019 study, for example, explored whether CBD improves sleep or anxiety, or both. The researchers reviewed the charts of 72 adults who had anxiety or sleeping problems at a psychiatric clinic.

The researchers found that after CBD treatment, 79% of the participants reported decreased anxiety. Almost 67% of people saw improved sleep scores within the first month, but these fluctuated over time.

The researchers conclude that CBD may benefit those with anxiety disorders and that most people tolerate it well.

Another 2019 study suggests that CBD significantly decreased anxiety in teenagers with social anxiety.

Pain and inflammation relief

People often use CBD to treat a variety of inflammatory conditions and types of pain, including:

  • arthritis pain
  • cancer pain
  • chronic back pain
  • fibromyalgia
  • neuropathic pain

While CBD isolate may provide pain relief, research indicates that a full-spectrum CBD product may be even more effective because cannabidiol acts synergistically with THC to boost its analgesic effects.

Epilepsy

CBD demonstrates ant seizure effects, which means it has the potential to treat epilepsy. According to the American Epilepsy Society, CBD research offers hope for those with the condition.

A 2017 study cites strong evidence to indicate that CBD improves seizure control in those with specific epilepsy syndromes.

However, research is still in its early stages, and much more exploration is necessary before people with epilepsy can take CBD as a reliable source of symptom management.

Those who have epilepsy should discuss their treatment options with a doctor or healthcare provider.

Cancer and the effects of cancer treatment

Research into the effects of CBD on cancer growth is also in the early stages. However, some animal studies do indicate that it might prevent the growth of cancer cells.

The National Cancer Institute indicates that CBD may alleviate some cancer symptoms and side effects of cancer treatment (including nausea and vomiting).

However, the Institute does not endorse any form of cannabis as a treatment due to insufficient research.

What is the correct dosage of CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) isolate, aka CBD crystal, slab or shatter, is the most pure form of CBD you can buy. The CBD molecule is isolated and extracted from hemp buds from the cannabis plant and sold as a white crystal or powder. CBD isolate is THC free, cheaper than other CBD products and can be used a number of different ways.

CBD isolate dosage – How much to take

CBD affects people differently depending on many variables, such as your size and sensitivity, as well as the type of condition being treated. What works for one person may not work for another. This means, when starting a CBD supplement programme, the individual needs to work out their own optimal dose.

Being able to measure out your dose of CBD isolate accurately is highly important. Guessing a dose of isolate is difficult and highly unadvised. Being able to exactly calculate and monitor CBD dosage is one of CBD isolates key advantages over other CBD products.

The optimal CBD dose is the minimum amount required to feel desired effect.

Steps for finding your optimal dose:

  1. Start with a low dose (15 – 25mg) to see how your body responds
  2. Take the same dose for a few days to give your body time to respond
  3. If desired results are not felt, slowly increase the dose by 15 – 25 mg at a time. With each increase, allow 2 – 3 days before increasing further
  4. Keep a record of your dose and how you were feeling each day
  5. Don’t dramatically increase dose
  6. If you feel any discomfort, reduce dosage
  7. CBD can have a subtle effect, there isn’t a ‘high’ or dramatically noticeable effect like THC (recreational cannabis)

When starting a CBD supplement program its recommended to consult your healthcare professional, especially if you take other medications as CBD drug interactions can occur.

How to use CBD isolate

CBD isolate has already been decarboxylated or activated, that means it doesn’t need to be heated in anyway for our bodies to absorb and benefit from the CBD.
There are a variety of different ways to use CBD isolate, each having their own advantages and drawbacks.

Ingesting – (The easiest method)

  1. Measure out desired dosage using sensitive kitchen scales
  2. Dissolve into drinks, mix into foods or swallow the isolate by itself. Isolate powder dissolves and mixes more easily than shatter/crystal, however its possible with either
  • Best to consume with other foods or after eating rather than on an empty stomach, as this makes it easier for your body to absorb the CBD
  • When ingesting CBD, the onset of effects takes longer, taking around 30 – 90 minutes to take effect. However, the effects also last longer than other methods.
  • A drawback of ingesting is less CBD is absorbed compared to sublingual, vaping or inhaling.

Sublingual – (An easy method)

  1. Measure out desired amount
  2. Rather than swallowing the isolate, place it under your tongue (sublingual) and allow it to dissolve in your mouth
  3. Leave it under your tongue for 90 seconds (or longer) if possible
  4. Wash down and swallow
  • This method results in the CBD being absorbed through blood vessels under the tongue and in the gums.
  • It’s a highly effective and efficient way to take CBD as most of it is able to be absorbed by the body

Research Into Dosage

As the FDA have only approved the use of CBD for specific forms of epilepsy, doctors know little about what dosage people should take when they use it for other reasons. As with any drug, the appropriate dosage is one that provides a therapeutic effect and is well-tolerated.

In clinical studies, researchers have used various oral dosages of CBD, ranging from 100–800 mg per day.

Some studies use even higher dosages. According to a review, an individual reported an improvement in psychosis after taking 1,200 mg per day for a few weeks. In another study, people with schizophrenia reported benefits after taking increasing dosages of 40–1,280 mg per day for 4 weeks.

In a study into the effects of CBD in people with Parkinson’s disease and psychosis, six participants showed significant improvement in symptoms with a dosage of 150 mg per day of CBD.

The following table lists the method of administration and dosage of CBD that researchers have used to study its therapeutic effects on different medical conditions.

To find out whether a CBD product is safe and to determine the effective dosage, people should consult a doctor.

Factors that may influence dosage

Several factors may influence the dosage that people can take. Depending on the medical condition or the reason why a person is taking CBD, they will need a different dosage.

Some people need high dosages to control epilepsy, whereas smaller dosages may be effective for anxiety.

Another factor that people should consider before using CBD is their weight. In many clinical trials and when using Epidiolex, doctors calculate a dose per kg of body weight. People who weigh less should, therefore, take lower dosages than people who weigh more.

Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants may increase the sedation effect of CBD. People who use other medications that can cause drowsiness should avoid or lower their dosage of CBD. Before mixing alcohol and other medications with CBD, a person should ask their doctor whether it is safe.

People must also consider the dosage in each form of CBD. A capsule of CBD has a specific dosage, but the dosage of oral solutions depends on the volume. For example, a CBD solution containing 25 mg per millilitre (ml) can provide 125 mg if a person takes a full teaspoon, which equates to 5 ml.

What dosages are safe?

Although data in humans remain limited regarding the effects of taking pure CBD, researchers suggest that it has relatively low toxicity.

In monkeys, CBD does not affect bodily functions or behaviour unless the animals receive dosages higher than 30 mg/kg orally each day for 90 days or 150 mg/kg intravenously.

In a human physical dependence study, researchers gave people 1,500 mg per day of CBD for 4 weeks. The study participants did not go through withdrawal after the 28 day trial. Another study found that doses up to 1,500 mg per day were well-tolerated.

The World Health Organization (WHO)Trusted Source also report that people usually tolerate CBD well. CBD does not cause a “high,” and it does not have the same potential for abuse as cannabis.

Side Effects

CBD isolate is generally a low-risk substance, especially as it does not contain THC. However, in some people, it may cause adverse reactions that include:

  • an increase or decrease in appetite
  • diarrhoea
  • fatigue
  • weight loss or weight gain
  • insomnia
  • irritability

CBD can also interact with some prescription or over-the-counter medications, so always talk to a doctor before using CBD or other cannabis products.

It can also interact with some dietary supplements. Individuals should take care if their medications or supplements carry a warning about grapefruit. Common examples include cholesterol drugs, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor) and others.

Both grapefruit and CBD can interfere with the metabolism of these medications. Anyone taking medication or supplements that carry a grapefruit warning should avoid CBD as well.

One study in mice indicated that CBD might also increase the risk of liver toxicity if taken in significant quantities. Anyone considering using CBD should talk to their doctor or one who specializes in CBD to evaluate their risk.

Find out more about doses of CBD here.

Summary

CBD isolate offers an alternative to full-spectrum CBD products. It may be especially useful for those who would like to try CBD without ingesting any of the psychoactive compound THC.

CBD isolate demonstrates several benefits, including relief from pain, inflammation, and anxiety.
